A new iPhone application helps minimise food waste

A new iPhone application has been created by Dundee firm Waracle Ltd to help people reduce food waste by suggesting recipes to cook with leftover ingredients, according to The BBC.

The free iPhone works by asking the user to add leftover food to an onscreen blender and then shake the application to create the recipe. In addition, it offers a portion size planner.

The launch of the iPhone coincides with the national Love Food Hate Waste scheme which estimates that around two thirds of food that has been wasted could have been eaten.

More figures reveal that on average Scottish households waste £430 of food per year.

There's a similar application (both a website and an iPhone and Android app) that's been out for over a year: BigOven.com. It has a Leftover Wizard that lets you search over 170,000 recipes by entering what's in your fridge.
