Bartlett Mitchell chef Adrian Brown is competing against Europe's finest at the final of the Délifrance International Sandwich Challenge in Paris this next month.
His sirloin steak-based "Sunday Best" sandwich won the UK heat of the Délifrance international sandwich challenge last October and now he takes his recipe to the Palais des Congres in Paris to go head-to-head with 11 international chefs at the Délifrance Sandwich World Cup.
Brown (25), who works in Reading for niche B&I contractor Bartlett Mitchell, combined his own favourite foods of sirloin steak, onion and ginger marmalade with rocket and horseradish mayonnaise served on a Délifrance rustic Fougassette bread roll to create his winning sandwich. Before leaving for the final he said: "A successful sandwich should contain a mix of simple and traditional flavours that complement each other, without being too complex.
"I'm looking forward to competing against my world-wide counterparts. British food doesn't always have the best reputation, but with the international sandwich title to contest, I am confident that a traditional British favourite will be a big hit with the international judges." This is the sixth year French bakery and patisserie manufacturer Délifrance has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged UK chefs to transform the humble sandwich into a gastronomic delight.
Last year Birmingham chef Edward Antonini won the UK and the International title with his sandwich "Spicy American Chicken". The winner of this year's Sandwich World Cup will earn an expenses paid weekend in a chateaux set in the wine region of Bordeaux.
