APETITO LAUNCHES PICK ‘N’ MIX DESSERTS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

23rd July 2008, 12:33pm

Rising to the challenge set by the Government’s new Nutrient Based Standards for Primary Schools which come into play in September this year, apetito has launched a new range of desserts to add to its portfolio of 36 main courses (including 10 vegetarian). Designed specifically for children and within the required nutritional specification, the dessert range also enables caterers to keep menu planning within the £2 per meal barrier.

The range is a FIRST for this market as it offers a 'pick and mix' solution to enable school caterers to deliver an interesting and varied offering to the children. With a selection of 5 fillings and 5 toppings, children can choose from 57 desserts, including Fruit Salad, Mixed Fruit Pie and Apple Pie.

The fillings and toppings come in separate foils giving caterer the flexibility to create a combination of different desserts. There's a choice of toppings, for example, Crumble, Oaty Crunch and Chocolate Sponge and a range of fillings - Apple, Pear, Apricot and Peach, and Mixed Fruit to name just a few.

Not only do the desserts meet the new standards but they contain no hydrogenated fats and are free from artificial colours, flavourings, preservatives and sweeteners and best of all they are tasty too!

"We are very excited about our new desserts range", comments David Griffiths, national account manager education, apetito. "We have carried out extensive research with local authorities and thoroughly tested our products in schools with children. The result is a range of desserts that we know will be enjoyed by the children and most importantly, allow Local Education Authorities to adhere to both the new nutritional guidelines and the £2 budget."

With the NEW range, children will be able to choose and create their own dessert, making a choice between, for example, an Apple filling topped with Oaty Crunch or a Sponge topping. Alternatively they can choose to have a Chocolate Sponge with Apple and Strawberry filling or a Waffle with Mixed Fruit filling drizzled with Chocolate Custard…the choice is theirs.

Cooking the frozen dishes is quick, easy and convenient. Desserts can be taken straight from the freezer and regenerated in any conventional oven or trolley keeping costs and space requirements to a minimum – you don't even need a kitchen! It is a successful concept that can allow any primary school to consistently deliver a hot meal with ease, on budget and to the required nutritional specification.
