Bristol museum café copes with Banksy fans

Over 8,500 people visited Bristol Museum over the weekend, after museum directors unveiled an exhibition by elusive artist Banksy, resulting in the café team having to open a second outlet.

It seems even Banksy himself is a fan of the café. He told the Bristol Evening Post on Friday: "I could have taken the show to a lot of places, but they do a very nice cup of tea in the museum."

Run by Compass Group UK & Ireland, the Museum café serves loose leaf tea in traditional china teapots.

The café was so busy that the team had to set up a second, temporary café in one of the galleries.

Sales of tea more than doubled a usual weekend and the homemade chocolate brownie was the most popular cake.

Cariad Silk, general manager for the Bristol City Museum café, said: "It was such a thrill for the team when Banksy praised our tea, and we certainly had to work hard this weekend to live up to our reputation. Of course, it's a shame we don't know what he looks like – we might have been serving Banksy in here for years and never realised!"

Through its leisure business, Milburns, Compass Group UK & Ireland has run the Edwardian-style café at the Bristol Museum for approximately four years serving hot meals, sandwiches and cakes, freshly made on the premises.
