Bryanston School goes green with Chartwells

30th June 2009, 10:53am

Dorset-based independent day and boarding school, Bryanston School, will be able to transform its food waste into compost for the school’s ground as part of a five-year contract extension with Chartwells.

By the time the new contract starts in September 2009, Bryanston School will be using a new environmentally friendly food disposal system which incorporates the De-waterer and Bionova systems.

The new system will recycle food waste, turning it into compost for use on the school's extensive 450 acre grounds, including the school's vegetable growing area.

Not only will Bryanston School be the first Chartwells school to introduce this environmentally friendly composter but it will also be the first Compass Group UK & Ireland site in the country.

With the contract worth £1 million a year, Chartwells will continue to provide student catering and manage the on-site bar, café and the conference and banqueting business. Chartwells will also convert the school's existing café into a Costa Coffee outlet during the summer break. The café is for student use during term time and for visitors during the summer holidays.

Paul Speakman, Bursar at Bryanston School, said: "Ever since I started working with Chartwells I have been impressed; the team has always made it clear that they want to work with us rather than imposing a set formula and it has always been a partnership of collaboration and cooperation. Chartwells has helped us to move forward on our healthy food initiative and we believe that as a result of our relationship, Bryanston is at the cutting edge of catering."

Tony Byrne, Business Director, Chartwells, said: "We understand that providing high quality, well balanced meals is key, particularly for the 600 boarders who eat all of their daily meals at school, but equally being green is increasingly important to many schools today. We look forward to seeing the grounds in all their glory after the school's food waste compost has been used."
