Caterers invited to enter Eggs Factor competition

22nd May 2008, 2:45pm

Both caterers and consumers are being invited to enter the Eggs Factor competition – before the 3 August closing date.

Entrants can take part online www.eggrecipes.co.uk/eggsfactor where they will be asked to explain why they have the 'egg factor' and explain what their signature egg dish is.

The judging panel will be assessing entrants on their ability to poach an egg successfully and to create a 'signature dish' featuring eggs, to be cooked in under 10 minutes.

After midnight on the closing date, short-listed entrants will be invited to a series of regional finals across the UK during September – taking place in Brighton, Coventry, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

Seven of the regional finals will compete in a national cook-off in October, when the 'face of eggs' will be crowned.

Each of these seven regional winners will win a prize of £500, and the overall prize will be £5,000 which will be announced at the grand final in London.

Food expert Paul Merrett who have joined British Lion Eggs to launch the competition and will also be helping to judge the finals, commented: "Eggs are a fantastic ingredient – versatile, tasty and quick to cook – for everyone from top chefs to those whose cooking skills are almost non-existent!"

Andrew Parker, chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, continued: "We're not looking for the next MasterChef, but we do want to find someone that can not only cook eggs well, but can also inspire others to have a go. They will then help us communicate the speed, ease and versatility of cooking with eggs."
