Herbert Goredema, a Westminster Kingsway College Foundation Degree student, has been awarded a National Adult Learners' Week Award in recognition of his dedication to his Hospitality Management studies while serving in the armed forces.

The Foundation Degree Award recognises and celebrates an outstanding adult learner on a Foundation Degree programme.

Goredema is studying on the foundation degree in hospitality and food service management with Westminster Kingsway College.

He said: "The Foundation Degree course at Westminster Kingsway College was advertised in a CPD Newsletter so I applied and I was lucky enough to be accepted. I wanted to study something that was in my chosen field. When I first started the course, it took a lot of self control as the demands on your time are very great.

"I am really pleased that I was able to stay with the course and am nearing my goals. Without the encouragement, help and support from my lecturers, I wouldn't have been able to manage the course. My enquiries by telephone, email and messenger were promptly responded to by my tutors. I also got lots of support from my fellow learners who have been absolutely brilliant."

Clare Mannall, hospitality management course leader at the college, was very pleased to nominate him for this award. She said: "During one period of his deployment overseas, Herbert was in Kenya with only 30 minutes access to the internet per week.

"After getting special permission to do his Finance exam online for 2 hours, the computer crashed half way through the exam! Undeterred, Herbert came back the next day and completed the exam and got excellent marks too. He has been inspirational in the way he has taken on board the course, having very little computer knowledge."

Goredema will be presented with the Foundation Degree Forward Award, at the Adult Learners' Week National Awards Ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, London on Friday 21 May 2010.

Adult Learners' Week always provides an excellent opportunity to think about learning a new language. The Esperanto Association has launched a course for beginners which I think provides an excellent springboard to the learning of many languages. I hope your readers may be interested :) You can see this at http://www.lernu.net
