Compass scoops several Springboard awards

22nd January 2008, 9:52am

Compass Group UK & Ireland picked up three accolades at the 2007 Springboard Awards for Excellence held at The Dorchester in London last week – the Diversity in Employment award, Corporate Citizenship award and the Chris Beaumont award.

Compass was also highly commended in the Education award, large companies category.

The awards reward and showcase outstanding practice in attracting and retaining people in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industry.

Diversity in Employment Award
This award was given for the ESS-led Rehabilitation of Offenders project which helps inmates at the female-only HM Prison Drake Hall in Staffordshire make a fresh start on their release.

The prisoners have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised catering qualifications working alongside members of the ESS staff at nearby Swynnerton defence training camp during the 6-9 months before their parole.

A total of 11 ex-offenders have been successfully employed in the catering and hospitality sector post release. Judges said the project represented "a fresh approach to solving a persistent local problem of staff shortage, with strong evaluation and proven results."

Corporate Citizenship Award
Compass Group won this award for setting "very high standards for ethical business practice." Judges said a "well rounded approach with consultation with local communities, clients, suppliers, government and regulators ensures Compass meets its responsibilities by investing in the communities where it operates."

Chris Beaumont Award
Andy Aston, development chef for Restaurant Associates, was one of a group of people working across London to receive the Chris Beaumont Award, given to those who have demonstrated the most outstanding contribution to meeting Springboard's aims over the last 12 months.

Education Award – Large Organisation
Compass was given a Highly Commended in this category for "continuing to develop multiple programmes and influencing people's perceptions of hospitality by engaging them in positive and enlightening experiences."

Mike Burton, HR Director Compass Group UK & Ireland said: "No other company was shortlisted in as many categories as Compass Group or won as many awards – something we can be really proud of and testament to the great work our people are doing."
