Enterprise Inns partners with the Carbon Trust

Enterprise Inns has teamed up with the Carbon Trust to cut its energy costs of its pub retailers by up to 30%.

The new web-based service will enable pub retailers to accurately measure energy consumption at their own pub and learn how to manage and reduce it effectively.

The service will provide tailored advice to pub retailers to enable them to develop their own energy management plans. It will be trialled by 40 Enterprise Inns pubs in a six month pilot phase. Each retailer could achieve cost savings of up to £2,400 during this period alone: a potential cost saving for the pilot group of around £100,000.

Linda Kibble, divisional facilities manager at Enterprise Inns, said: "One of the largest operating costs for a pub is energy, at an average of £16,000 per annum. Pub retailers frequently ask us for advice on where they can make the biggest energy savings.

"We believe the outcomes of this pilot will shape a service that will benefit all retailers, not only by offering advice and useful tips but by giving retailers confidence to invest in technology that will help them increase their operating profit. We expect this programme to deliver energy cost savings of between ten and 30 per cent at each retailer which would generate a significant increase in operating profit.

"By helping our retailers to gain a better understanding of their energy usage and spend, and how they can reduce it, they will be able to operate more efficiently and profitably."

According to the Carbon Trust, there are a number of steps that pubs can take that will not only save money but can also create a more comfortable environment for guests.

For example, lowering room temperatures by 1oC can reduce annual heating bills by as much as 10%. Heating timers are also useful for pubs so that the building reaches optimum temperature just as people arrive and begins to cool down close to closing time.

Dominic Burbridge, the Carbon Trust's senior adviser to the hospitality and leisure sector, said: "We have advised Enterprise Inns on how best to focus its efforts to make its pubs more energy efficient and we have been very impressed with the company's practical and proactive approach. This new service should give pub operators the support they need to deliver real and rapid savings."
