Even more kids are opting for school meals

An increase of 2,733 meals per day were served to children in Hertfordshire primary schools last month, compared to February 2007.

A healthy 47% of pupils in Hertfordshire schools opted for school meals last month, the Watford Observer reported.

Hertfordshire Catering, the County Council's school meal provider, served up 39,526 primary school meals a day.

County council leader Robert Gordon and chief executive Caroline Tapster joined children in the meal queue at Howe Dell Primary School in Hatfield to sample the meals for themselves.

Tapster commented: "School meals have certainly been transformed since I went to school. I really enjoyed going back to school and the quality of my meal shows that Hertfordshire's catering staff is serving tasty, balanced meals that are great value for money."

She chose homemade lasagne with broccoli followed by fresh fruit salad.
