Free seminar theatres at Hotelympia

24th January 2008, 2:08pm

The Institute of Hospitality will be hosting free ‘Sustainable Futures’ and ‘Careers in Hospitality’ Seminar Theatres at this year’s Hotelympia to focus on the latest trends and developments in the industry.

The Institute will also be offering a membership discount to potential new members who sign up at the Institute's stand at N1660.

The Sustainable Futures Seminar Theatre will run throughout the entire event, and will include over 20 seminar sessions on sustainability in procurement, design, food and drink, and kitchen equipment. Each session will look at the practical issues facing the hospitality industry.

Speakers will include Alastair Storey, chief executive of Baxter Storey, David Riley, commercial director at Hobart, Barry Bolton, chairman of ACM Waste Management System, and David Sharp (pictured), executive head chef at the Radisson Edwardian Manchester.

In addition, there will be five one-hour panel debates to be held at 1pm on each of these days. Subjects of debate will include: waste and recycling, a look at seasonality, energy management, and sustainable tourism. This will enable visitors to discuss the challenges they are encountering.

Panelists will include: David Clarke FIH MI, chief executive of Best Western Hotels, Martin Couchman, deputy chief executive of British Hospitality Association, and Bernard Donoghue, head of VisitBritain.

And the 'Careers in Hospitality' Theatre will take place on 18-19 February. Topics of discussion will include: how to get promoted; how to negotiate a pay rise, and opportunities for working abroad.

The panel discussions will feature: 'Does flexible working work? chaired by professor Liz Doherty of Sheffield Hallam University; and 'why don't the British want a career in hospitality? by Alex Buchanan, editor of Catering in Scotland magazine.

This year's Hotelympia event will be kicking off from 17-21 February at ExCel, London.
