Harrison’s helps Ribston Hall achieve national healthy schools status

1st December 2009, 11:31am

Harrison Catering Services has announced that Ribston Hall, one of the schools that it provides school meals for, has been awarded ‘National Healthy Schools Status’ (NHSS).

Harrison Catering was appointed to the catering role at the school in September and has since seen the number of pupils opting in for school meals increase, helping them to reach their new status.

Unlike primary schools, secondary schools are responsible for contracting their own school meals caterer. Sandy Woodcock, business manager at Ribston Hall High School, said: "We considered several bids and gave Harrison's the nod because of their commitment to using fresh ingredients and the fact that they were happy to tailor their menus to what our pupils wanted.

"Girls are very different to boys in terms of what they want to eat. They tend to be more receptive to healthy eating and to trying different things. They don't always want a big plateful of food; they would often rather graze on lots of different things like a bowl of pasta or jacket potato, a piece of fruit and yoghurt. They get that flexibility and choice now and although it's still early days, we're already seeing more pupils in the dining hall."

Geoffrey Harrison, Harrison Catering Services managing director, added: "We are delighted to have helped Ribston Hall achieve the Healthy School status. At Harrison we believe that catering should be based on quality, fresh food prepared daily on-site and tailored for each customer, be it a school, university or businesses."

Harrison Catering Services was founded by Geoffrey Harrison fifteen years ago and has a current turnover of just under £50million.
