Harrison Catering Services plans to cook up feast for World Cup

29th April 2010, 8:38am

Harrison Catering Services is launching a new menu at many of its schools throughout London and the South East to celebrate the 2010 FIFA World Cup games.

The menu will be on offer for a fortnight, from Friday 11th June to Friday 25th June and will provide one dish every day to correspond to a competing country, in accordance with the official schedule.

This will see tailored recipes for food from countries ranging from Mexico, Denmark and Portugal to Nigeria, Korea and Australia being served; culminating in a final day dedicated to South Africa, where the entire menu will be replaced and inspired by South African cuisine on Tuesday 29th June.

The aim of this is to get kids excited about different foods they might not necessarily eat every day.

In addition to the tailored menu, there will be a competition for pupils to take part in across the borough to add an element of fun to the fortnight. This will work by asking pupils to collect stamps in exchange for purchasing main meals from the school cafeteria. Once the 12th and final stamp has been gained on the South African theme day the completed card is then to be posted in a special World Cup postbox and entered for a prize draw.

The winning pupil – one in each borough - will win a football strip of their choice, and a complete team strip for their school team. The school of the winning pupil can also choose to enjoy an outdoor BBQ instead of their usual school lunch, which will be provided on a sunny day in mid July.

Geoffrey Harrison, managing director of Harrison Catering, commented: "We think there is a great opportunity to capitalise on the excitement around the FIFA World Cup to engage pupils at our schools and have decided to roll this out to several of our Local Authority contracts.

"The natural link between football as a form of exercise, and healthy eating seems logical, and presents a fantastic opportunity to introduce new and exciting types of food to some of our most discerning customers!"
