IMPROVING GREEN CREDENTIALS WITH MEIKO’S NEW FOOD WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM

4th April 2008, 12:01pm

Waste food produce is notoriously difficult and costly to dispose of – even without the added health and hygiene issues of rotting food, vermin infestation, and unholy smells.

In a move to simplify the process, and to help caterers meet the new legislation on pre-treating food waste, Meiko is launching the Microvac food waste vacuum system.

Microvac is a system designed to handle, transport and store food waste in a range of catering operations, from hotels and restaurants through to hospitals, schools and the armed forces.

The system operates using high vacuum to transport food waste from the point of disposal to the point of storage. It comprises four main components: food waste inlet, interconnecting pipe system, food collection and storage vessel, and a vacuum source with integral control unit.

Microvac operates by grinding and mixing waste food in the inlet with a set amount of water, which is then converted to a liquid mass that is easily extracted later in the process. The liquid mass is transported by high vacuum through a plastic soil pipe network to a liquid separator within the storage tank.

Once food reaches the storage tank, the majority of the water is extracted via a filtering screen and disposed of into the waste water system. Finally, the food waste in the storage tank is discharged into a sealed tank that forms an integral part of a specialist waste collection vehicle. This food slurry is then transported to a waste handling facility, or alternatively to a bio-gas or composting plant for processing or recycling.

The advantages of Microvac are manifold – the very highest kitchen hygiene standards are upheld, a considerable reduction in labour handling and costs, and importantly, from an environment perspective, waste volume is substantially reduced and, ultimately the organic waste becomes an asset, rather than a landfill burden.

From feasibility study, through to installation and ongoing customer service, Meiko work hand in hand with customers switching to the cost-effective and environmentally-sound Microvac system.
