Kids should get fishy

12th November 2007, 11:28am

We know it can be difficult to get kids to eat seafood. But research shows, the younger children are when they try new things, the more likely they are to accept and enjoy them.

Fish is an incredibly versatile food – quick to cook and with a huge range of flavours and textures and health benefits in abundance, it is the perfect answer when looking for a quick and tasty meal.

It's always good for the whole family to spend time together and there are so many added benefits about sitting down together to eat a nutritious meal. But when the kids are at school it can be more difficult to ensure that they're eating healthily.

Seafish developed The SuperHumans characters as part of a campaign to get positive health messages about eating fish across to kids within their school environment, in a fun, eye-catching way.

The campaign began in Scotland in 2004, introducing children to the two SuperHumans characters – who were just average kids until they discovered the magic powers of omega 3.

The promotional activity began in schools, where the kids were issued with stickers in return for choosing the fish dish at mealtimes. The next stage of the activity was rolled out this year, arming caterers with exciting recipes and posters, food stabbers and badges for the children.

The SuperHumans characters have also been visiting Asda stores throughout the UK.

The Food Standards Agency's recommendation is that we eat "2 portions of fish a week" - one of which should be oil-rich, like mackerel or herring.

Different species have different health benefits, so varying the type of seafood you serve maximises these benefits.

Nutritionist Juliette Kellow gives these top tips for getting children to eat more seafood:

• Start experimenting – if some of your family don't like cod you might find they love prawns – there are oceans of flavours and textures to try!

• Plan weekly menus to try to incorporate seafood into different mealtimes, making it easier to get two portions a week. For a quick, healthy lunch, top slices of wholemeal toast with sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce.

• Create your own seafood pizza with the kids. They will love getting involved - try prawns, smoked mackerel or even a few canned anchovies for a fishy feast.

The SuperHumans website was recently relaunched and at the end of this month a forum where caterers and busy parents can share tips on how to get children to eat fish www.thesuperhumans.co.uk be available for you to post your messages onto.

Why not try some tempting recipes that the children can enjoy. A tasty fish pie is likely to appeal to everyone and is the perfect winter warmer.

There are even more easy and delicious recipes on the Seafish website.
