The pupils have been heavily involved with decisions regarding the menu after completing a questionnaire of the top 10 winter school meals they would like to see. The SFSS have now analysed these results and created a two week rolling menu which will be shown to the children and discussed when the SFSS meet with the pupils from the school council.
Richard Harris, headteacher at Burbage Junior School said: "The pupils have been developing their understanding of food through a tour of the school kitchen so they understand what goes in to cooking a healthy meal. They have also had a talk from the service dietician to learn about the nutritional guidelines in food."
Sue Martin at the SFSS added: "School meals are so important, as often a good nutritious meal can improve children's concentration levels and in turn their performance. We are pleased that the children are so interested and taking an active role in helping decide what they want to eat. Food should be fun and we are trying to keep the children as involved as possible with these decisions as ultimately it will be their menu."
The SFSS are regularly updating the menus for children across Leicestershire to keep them fresh and new, with the most recent menu being launched at the end of April. Dishes on the menu at the moment include: vegetable fajitas, roast turkey, stuffing and gravy, potato and lentil curry with desserts such as summer fruit pudding and orange jelly.
