Primary school children in Lanarkshire have been getting hands-on advice about healthy eating on board a touring cookery bus, according to the BBC.

The touring bus recently made its way to St Thomas' primary in Wishaw where pupils were given the opportunity to makes dishes including salmon bridies and cranachan.

The bus, which is visiting schools around the country and will be available for 42 weeks a year, has been developed in partnership with the Focus on Food Campaign to get across healthy eating and food safety messages to pupils to encourage healthier lifestyles.

Two teachers work with school staff during their tour to inspire children and highlight the importance of food education, while supporting the national curriculum, teachers' own objectives, and government health messages.

Funded by the Scottish Government and the Food Standards Agency Scotland, the bus opens out to provide a fully equipped state-of-the-art classroom/kitchen for 16 students.

Lydia Wilkie, assistant director of the Food Standards Agency Scotland, said: "We are totally committed to engaging children, as early as possible, in understanding the link between food and health and preparing them to make informed choices about what they eat in the future."
