North Somerset schools take part in Harvest Festival celebrations

More than 250 pupils, parents and staff at Churchill Primary School, Langford, North Somerset, recently tucked into a lunch of home-grown fruit and vegetables as part of the school’s Harvest Festival celebrations.

School catering company Aspens Services and Churchill Primary organised the meal featuring home-grown produce from the gardens of parents and teaching staff, as well as from the school's own garden.

The lunch followed a harvest service for the whole school at St Mary's Church, Langford, where pupils took gifts of food and home produce which were later donated to the Children's Hospice at Wraxall.

Youngsters and parents feasted on two stews – one vegetarian and one using chicken and vegetables – with home-grown pumpkins, marrows, carrots, potatoes and herbs.

The catering team made bread to accompany the meal, while for pudding, they dished up apple crumble and custard. Pupils also helped peel some of the vegetables and fruit.

Aspens Services food and beverage executive Ken Tee commented on the event: "Getting the whole school – pupils, parents and teaching staff – involved in creating a great-tasting meal using fresh, home-grown fruit and vegetables turned the harvest lunch into a really special occasion."

"As a company, we're committed to using fresh, local produce and work very closely with schools to help children learn about where their food comes from and appreciate that food which is good for you can also taste delicious. We believe it's also very important to involve parents and it was lovely having mums and dads there to share the harvest lunch with the children."
