PG Tips achieves full Rainforest Alliance Certification

PG tips has revealed that its tea is now fully Rainforest Alliance Certified.

The PG tips tea bags and PG tips loose leaf tea has been grown using sustainable farming methods by workers who earn a decent living and have good working conditions.

The company has worked hard to improve standards of living for workers, providing free housing, medical care and schools for over 75,000 people. The company has planted over 870,000 trees since 2000 and is proud that 97% of the energy used on its estate at Kericho comes from hydropower and renewable forests.

Tensie Whelan, president from the Rainforest Alliance, said: "People in the UK today are far more aware of the fragile ecosystems and poor conditions experienced by some farmers and communities around the world and are choosing to reflect that in their purchasing decisions. 

"We are delighted that we've been able to collaborate in the full certification of PG tips tea and in doing so support the environment in Kericho where the lives of the local workers have significantly improved.  Workers on the Unilever estate receive a monthly wage which is three times the minimum wage and the company has built a fully staffed hospital, four health centres and 18 schools."
