The 'World Pizza Champion' title holder, Domenico Crolla, got the chance to create a “special” meal for Pope Benedict XVI on his recent visit to the UK – serving up the pontiff's favourite meal of Marinara pizza.

Crolla, who is the owner of Napoli restaurant in Glasgow, said he was thrilled to have been asked to create a "special" pizza for the Pope - and spent hours perfecting the dish to make it perfect for the Pontiff.

The luxury dish was topped with an edible gold leaf pizza and is thought to have been worth between £2,000 and £3,000.

To create the pizza - which was made in what is thought to be the Pope's favourite variety - the Italian chef used Molino Alimonti flour from Eurostar Commodities.

And after the pizza was served to the Pope on his arrival in Glasgow Domenico said: "It was a great honour to be asked to create a dish for the pope. The Mariana pizza is a timeless, classic dish of tomato, garlic and oregano with no cheese. I was over the moon when he ate the entire thing!"
