Recession increases demand for free school meals

As the recession deepens, a new report from the Local Government Association has shown that the demand for free school meals has increased.

The survey of local authorities revealed that across the country businesses, residents and public sector organisations are feeling the effects of the recession.

It shows that as the downturn bites, people are increasingly turning to local authorities and public services to help them through tough financial times.

Two out of five council areas have experienced an increase in demand for free school meals.

Cllr Margaret Eaton, Chairman of the LGA, said: "The research reveals the extent to which people and businesses are feeling the pinch. From a rise in homelessness to an increase in mental health problems, councils are reporting a huge uptake in their services."
