Record breaking 13 tonne Biryani

Kohinoor Foods Limited, a basmati rice brand in India, has broken the Guinness World Record attempt for the world’s largest Biryani, weighing in at 13 tonnes.

The main ingredients for the spectacular, which took place in New Delhi, India, included:
  • three cranes to manoeuvre 3,000 kilos of Kohinoor Basmati rice,
  • 3,000 kilos of vegetables,
  • a 'pinch' of salt weighing 86 kilos
  • 85 kilos of chilli peppers
  • 1,200 litres of oil
  • 6,000 litres of water
  • a 'sprinkling' of 10 kilos of exotic spices and aromatic condiments
Witnessed by a UK Guinness Book of World Record's (GWR) representative, 60 Indian chefs worked long into the night in the 10-hour cooking fest.
The Biryani was cooked on a platform above the custom-made 16-feet high cooking vessel which was set upon a three-feet high furnace and the chefs had to wear fire-resistant outfits as they stirred the curry using oar-like ladles.

Speaking about the 13-tonne curry, Mr Sumit Arora, managing director of Kohinoor UK said: "This event is a one-of-its-kind endeavour and a truly magnificent grandeur. We are very proud to be involved with an activity of such scale and magnificence."

The day was held at the sporting venue of Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium and was attended by locals.

The final dish was divided up and trucked to city orphanages once GWR had certified the final weigh in of the cooked Biryani.
