Sandwich market shows strong growth
9th May 2008, 2:58pm
The British Sandwich Association has released its latest report showing that the commercial sandwich market has grown by around 4.5% in value over the last year.
Published in conjunction with TNS, the report shows how Subway rules the sandwich roost. With 1198 stores nationwide, Subway is achieving sandwich sales of around £307million, almost doubling Tesco's figure.
Retail in-store cafes and restaurants didn't fare so well down nearly 16% in volume on last year.
Despite tough competition in the form of supermarkets, sandwich and snack bars have forged ahead with volume growth of over 12%.
The traditional triangular sandwich continues to hold its own. In the year it outstripped overall market growth by almost 2% and now accounts for almost 67% of all sandwich sales.
The report also finds that consumers are showing little signs of responding to healthy eating campaigns, with sales of healthy option sandwiches unchanged over the 12 months accounting for 15% of sales.
Published to coincide with British Sandwich Week in May, the report revealed how wrap sales were down by 1% in volume over the last year and by contrast bagel sales have grown by some 66%, albeit off a low base.
The British Sandwich Industry Report 2008 will be published by the Association in partnership with TNS during May.
Copies will be available to BSA members at £975 + VAT and non-members for £1,275 + VAT. Further details can be obtained from the Association on 01291 636331.
