Manchester Fayre, Manchester's school meals provider, cooked up a treat last week at St Francis RC Primary School in Gorton with some traditional English dishes.

Children tucked into old favourites including fish and chips, apple crumble and custard and St George's biscuits, made especially for the occasion.

Steve Southern, head of catering and town hall services at Manchester City Council, said: "We like to keep the school lunch menu interesting and varied and theme days are always very popular.

"It gives many of the pupils the opportunity to try favourite dishes from other countries and cultures – we've had Indian, Chinese, Caribbean, Irish – all sorts of different menus and eating fish and chips for lunch went down very well indeed."
