Schools to have ‘food champion’ pupils

22nd April 2008, 10:08am

Schools in Essex will look to appoint ‘food champions’ in an attempt to encourage kids to eat better and be healthier.

Local councillors in Redbridge approved the plans which ask schools to talk to school children more and investigate eating habits such as snacking.

Cllr Michael Stark, a cabinet member for children's services explained why the council is introducing the scheme: "It is very important at the present time, with people's concerns about diet. Research has proved that if they (children) eat well and are fed well, they perform better at school."

Recommendations at the meeting also suggested the council looks at a borough-wide contract introduced by September 2009 to improve healthy eating.
