Gordon Atterson
Encore Catering

Part of the Direct Care and Services department of Glasgow City Council, Encore under Atterson was charged with operating the catering at Kelvingrove Art gallery and Museum when it re-opened. And decided to take a slightly different approach when it came to recruiting a new 60-strong team. He first hosted a series of open days to meet interested candidates in an informal way, then used service culture questionnaires to help in drawing up a shortlist. Before final selection Atterson got everyone to take part in a full day's custome4r care workshop. He then secured a training budget and all successful candidates had a six-week learning programme followed by three weeks running the café as a training restaurant. The work put in helped the venue successfully host a Royal opening, the International Rugby Awards and the European Commonwealth Games Delegate Dinner.
