Simon Hulstone, head chef of the Elephant Bar and Restaurant, Torquay, Devon has been selected as the UK entry to compete alongside 19 other at the Bocuse d’Or in Stavanger, Norway on July 1st and 2nd.
The competition offers an opportunity for new nations to present and promote their gastronomic culture, and a chance for new countries to join the Bocuse d'Or family.
This new cooking contest will select the 12 European participants for the world finals of the Bocuse d'Or 2009, to be held at Lyons as part of the Sirha trade exhibition.
Lots were drawn early last month at the headquarters of Norrøna (distributor for Convotherm/Enodis in Norway) at Stavanger in the presence of nine candidates invited by 'Innovation Norway'
The nine had expressed their wish to go to Norway, specifically to take their marks and familiarise themselves with Norwegian salmon and lamb which will have to be used when creating dishes for the competition.
Bocuse d'Or Europe president Evvind Hellstrom said: "European cuisine offers many different aspects resulting from age-old traditions, typical of each country. This is not found on the other continents, where gourmet cuisine is often inspired by France.
"After Stavanger, European Capital of Culture, where Buffet, a trade exhibition dedicated to out-of-home catering, is being held, it will travel across the other European countries from 2010.
Five countries - France, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and Sweden – qualified early thanks to their performance in the Bocuse d'Or 2007 . The top three candidates will receive the prizes: of E12,000, E9000 and E6000.
