Sodexo employees collect three tonnes of food for poverty-beating charity

21st June 2010, 11:23am

Contract caterer Sodexo has collected more than 175, 000kg of food for the national food redistribution charity FareShare.

The employee event was part of its global 'Servathon', a Sodexo initiative to engage employees to donate food, serve meals and raise money to help people suffering from malnutrition and hunger around the world.

Sodexo's commitment to helping local communities is part of its 'Better Tomorrow Plan', the company's sustainability strategy to 2020. Employees from offices including London and Brazil joined forces to collect food for the servathon, and were able to boost donations with the help of their suppliers, which include Brakes, Premier Foods and Soufflet Group.

It is the second time that Sodexo in the UK have participated in the event and they have seen an increase in donations of 75,000kg compared to last year. In total, more than 39,000 employees were able to build more than three tones of donations – the equivalent of 7,000 meals - including 1,000kg of rice, 590kg of pasta and 270kg of tinned tomatoes.

Thomas Jelly, Sodexo corporate citizenship manager said: "This years Servathon has been a great success and it is fantastic that Sodexo employees and suppliers get involved in such a big way to donate an impressive amount of quality food. Sodexo is committed to helping local communities and alleviating hunger through its STOP Hunger campaign, this is just one example of how the company is working towards this commitment."
