Tillery Valley, part of Sodexo UK and Ireland, has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after taking action on climate change by measuring and improving its carbon efficiency by 19.5% per tonne of product manufactured over a three-year period.

To achieve the certificate, Tillery Valley, Sodexo's food manufactoring business, based in Abertillery, Gwent, was assessed by an accredited assessor for the Carbon Trust Standard who gathered data from the company's three main energy sources to demonstrate how its initiatives have improved carbon efficiency over the past three years.

Chris Woodbridge, technical director, Tillery Valley, and his team have driven a comprehensive environmental management programme that has delivered continous carbon reductions as part of a long-term strategy.

Highlights include the installation of a new computer-based loading and routing system, a plant relayout that has streamlined manufacturing to to minimise holding times, and a full plan of every activity requiring energy on the site.

Tillery Valley's Carbon Trust Standard achievement illustrates its level of commitment to Sodexo's 'Better Tomorrow Plan', the company's worldwide sustainability strategy to 2020.

Woodbridge said: "It is great to have an independent body confirm that the actions we have taken have improved carbon efficiency across our organisation, ultimately, reducing our impact on the environment. This isn't just about giving us a competitive edge, but more about doing the right thing."

The Carbon Trust Standard is the world's first carbon performance mark that requires organisations to demonstrate that they are measuring, managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through quantifiable year-on-year reductions.
