In groups of twos and threes, students had the opportunity to assist development chef Dave Riley with cooking quick, healthy and authentic Oriental dishes. Students were then able to dig in and sample their handiwork – including noodle based and stir-fry dishes - during the classes and choose their favourites throughout the week in the school's canteen.
To inspire further cooking at home, each of the participating students will receive a copy of the 'St Gregory's Catholic High School Wok Cookery Recipe Book' as a keepsake in time for the summer holidays. The book includes the recipes from the week and photographs of the students and chef in action.
Headteacher Steve Clarke said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn about the food from another culture, whilst also appreciating that meals can be both tasty and healthy. We really appreciate the partnership that exists between the school and our caterers and feel that this relationship is of great benefit in educating our young people to adopt healthy eating as part of a healthy lifestyle."
Tony Byrne, business director, Chartwells, added: "Chartwells has provided the catering for St Gregory's for seven years and the Oriental cookery sessions are just one part of a new programme of events we are introducing into the school.
"In the new academic year, a six week after-school cooking programme for a number of students taking the school's catering course will take place, culminating in a banquet for the schools' governors, senior leadership team, teachers and parents. Chartwells is keen to spread its passion for food with the whole school community and is delighted that St Gregory's shares our enthusiasm for cooking."
