Starbucks strikes first ever UK hotel deal
13th March 2008, 4:18pm
Starbucks has announced its first UK hotel licensing agreement with Shire Hotels, which will see them open a coffee house within one of their properties on the Aztec West Business Park in Bristol.
The new coffee house will form part of the 36 bedroom lodgeonthepark.com and follows other recent Starbucks openings across four Center Parcs locations, the Beatles Story in Liverpool and Jersey Airport.
Creating around 15 new jobs, the new store opens this week on 14 March 2008.
It will be staffed and operated by Shire Hotels employees in accordance with Starbucks brand guidelines.
Starbucks will provide products such as coffee, food and merchandise as well as training, operational and marketing support.
Commenting today, Rupert Lawrie, director of business alliances, Starbucks said: "We are excited to confirm that this is our first licensed store in the UK hotels sector and marks the beginning of bringing the Starbucks Experience to hotel guests. In North America today we have 171 licensed Starbucks stores operating as part of Hotel services and we hope that this is the first of many similar agreements in the UK."
Antony Spencer, managing director, Shire Hotels said: "The lodge will offer superb contemporary facilities as well as excellent value, and the addition of Starbucks will only add to its attractiveness to both business and leisure guests."
Starbucks licensing began in 2005 and has proved successful for the coffee giant.
The scheme has allowed Starbucks to open in establishments such as hotels, transport hubs, business centres and universities.
The scheme first ran in the United States in 1996 with over 3,800 Starbucks licensed stores currently in operation.
