Students at Sale Grammar School complete healthy eating challenge

Students at Sale Grammar School have completed a six week long healthy eating challenge set to encourage a healthier outlook on life.

Twenty eight Year 8 pupils were asked to design and develop a nutritious dish as part of the school's National Healthy School Programme. The grand final saw the team formed by Lydia and Emily crowned for their Chinese Dream sauce.

The cooking workshops organised with the support of the school's meal supplier, Pasta King, encouraged students to get a better understanding of the food production process.

Food technology pupils faced the challenge of developing a new healthy product while taking into consideration customers' preferences, cost and nutritional values of ingredients.  The winning meal, which could potentially be added to the company's existing range, was required to meet health guidelines on sugar and fat levels.

Mrs Jan Branch, assistant headteacher at Sale Grammar School, commented: "In today's fast food culture, it's vital to remember the importance of a balanced diet. We are very fortunate to have built such a great relationship with Pasta King. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to improve their own cooking skills whilst developing their understanding of healthy eating and commercial product development."

Lydia, from the winning team said: "The challenge was a great experience. I think it is very important to follow a balanced diet to stay healthy. I now know how to choose nutritious ingredients to compose a balanced and tasty meal."
