Supporting British Sandwich Week

Ham is the nation's favourite when it comes to sarnies and BPEX is encouraging caterers to take advantage of it to boost sales during British Sandwich Week.

The official week, which is organised by The British Sandwich Association and runs from 10 – 16 May, is aimed at increasing sales of sandwiches in foodservice outlets as well as in the commercial sector.

This year the focus is on the 'The Great British Hammie' – a classic and much loved sandwich filling and sandwich designer Mark Arnold has created three new 'Hammie' fillings especially for the week.

The three sandwiches that make up the range are:
• Gammon ham with cream cheese, chives and cucumber on white bread
• Gammon ham with English mustard mayonnaise and lettuce on malted bread
• Gammon ham with free range egg and watercress on malted bread

BPEX foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger is urging foodservice establishments to get involved and give their lunchtime sandwich sales a boost.

He said: "British Sandwich Week is an excellent platform for caterers to increase profits this May.

"With the focus on ham this year, it should be easy for many caterers who will undoubtedly already offer some type of ham sandwich on their lunch menus. If not, why not make use of one of the three recipe ideas or create your very own version of the Hammie and promote it as part of the Week? Creations such as 'Ham Hock Baguette' and 'Ham with Red Onion and Apple Salsa Sandwich' are appealing yet simple to prepare and deliver excellent returns."

It really is easy to take part in the Week and a great opportunity to also generate additional profit from roast meats served as part of a carvery.

But Tony reminds chefs to think about the description of sandwiches on menus. He says: "As with any other meat dish, consumers are increasingly interested in the quality and origin of ham served, so make it a real feature of it on menus.

"It goes without saying that using better quality fillers will enable you to justify higher price points. BPEX's Quality Standard Mark for pork, bacon, ham and sausages shows that the meat has been produced to high standards of animal welfare and quality assurance. So if you source Quality Standard meat, make sure your customers know."
