17th March 2008, 12:37pm
Taste Lancashire, Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board's eating out assessment scheme, has reached a milestone by awarding its 100th plaque and certificate.
The scheme assesses eating places for their public areas, cleanliness, bar and restaurant facilities, hospitality, service and efficiency, and use of local produce with the help of local produce champion Made in Lancashire.
The Dalton Arms at Glasson Dock near Lancaster has achieved the `Quality Assured` mark and joins 99 other Lancashire eating places as diverse as the RSPB's Leighton Moss tea rooms near Carnforth, Blackpool Tower Ballroom and Northcote Manor at Langho.
Robert Talbot and his family having been running the Dalton Arms for the past year. He said: "We are thrilled to be the 100th and gain recognition for offering quality food and service. It's a real step forward towards our ambition to turn the pub in to a gastro pub and has inspired us to now apply for further awards.
"In our view, working together as a community and using local suppliers such as our neighbours the Port of Lancaster Smokehouse, coffee from J Atkinson & Co in Lancaster and Goosnargh corn fed chicken from Johnson and Swarbrick is definitely the way forward. We'll also be actively involved with the Glasson Maritime Weekend this Easter."
Jane Saxon, business support manager at the tourist board who is managing Taste Lancashire said: "To reach 100 accreditations in such a relatively short period of time is fantastic. We don't hesitate to promote quality here, so it is good to see many of Lancashire's eating places also putting quality first. It is what customers are increasingly demanding.
"And Made in Lancashire's excellent work getting eating places to use local suppliers is also firmly in tune with the expectations of many of our visitors. Lancashire has so much great local produce that it really can make business sense to `buy local`."
James Berresford, director of tourism at the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), said: "Food and drink are vital ingredients for successful tourism, playing an ever-important role in defining the region's identity. England's Northwest is a region with a passion for great food and the Taste Lancashire eating out scheme gives well-deserved recognition to leaders in this field."
Assessments for Taste Lancashire are by mystery visit and lead to a score out of 100.
Only those venues scoring 60 per cent or above are able to be rewarded and become entitled to use a `Quality Assured` mark.
A score of 80 per cent or above merits a `Highest Quality Assured` mark.
Lancashire is celebrating its local produce this year with Taste Lancashire 08 – The Year of Food and Drink, in partnership with Liverpool's European Capital of Culture status. The tourist board has set up
