Taste of Sussex supports Truly British, Truly Local campaign

8th January 2010, 12:11pm

A Taste of Sussex has announced its support for Compass Group UK & Ireland's Truly British, Truly Local food sourcing campaign.

The campaign will mean Sussex farmers, growers and producers will have the opportunity to supply their produce to more Sussex and UK cafés, deli bars and restaurants than ever before.

Through the campaign Compass promotes the use of truly and traceably local produce.  Compass' 'Truly Local' can only be used in reference to products which have full British traceability including food which has been grown and harvested or born, bred and slaughtered within 50 miles from the place of eating, not to food which has been processed or packaged in the area, giving consumers full confidence in the origin of their food.

Compass already works with Goodwood Home Farm in Sussex, the UK's largest lowland organic farm, to supply some of its meat and milk to the Goodwood racecourse and motor circuit, for which Compass provides the catering.

However, with the introduction of Truly British, Truly Local, the Farm may also be able to supply its produce to Compass locations within a 50 mile radius where its food will be classed as 'Truly Local' on menus and to other Compass clients around the country where its produce will be categorised as 'Truly British.'

Hilary Knight, co-ordinator of A Taste of Sussex, said: "A Taste of Sussex wholeheartedly supports Compass' aim to promote the use of Sussex's wonderful produce around the county. The quality and quantities of fresh produce available is all too often not reflected on our menus both at home and in the hospitality industry, but initiatives such as these help put Sussex's fare on the map."
