The School Food Trust appoints new chair

1st February 2010, 1:01pm

Social entrepreneur, campaigner and chef Rob Rees MBE has been appointed as the new chair of The School Food Trust's board.

As a chef, Rees won many accolades and he now runs a food tour and cookery training business, The Cotswold Chef. In addition, he is the director of a consultancy company and is the chief executive of the Wiggly Worm charity, which uses food projects to help and rehabilitate vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

Rees was also a founder member of the School Food Trust Board in 2005 and is a non-executive director of Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust, a Board Member for Visit England and former Board Member of the Food Standards Agency.

He commented on his new role: "It is a great honour to be given the opportunity to chair an organisation that is undertaking work that is so critical to the future health, well being and performance of our children and communities.

"The School Food Trust has made great progress already, introducing new nutritional standards and changing how school food is perceived.  However, there is still much to do to encourage more children to try healthier school lunches, to promote the importance of school lunch in tackling obesity and in improving the entire experience of lunchtime for young people.

"We must now all redouble our efforts to ensure that children are choosing and eating school food and that local authorities, schools and caterers are giving food within schools the priority is absolutely demands."

The School Food Trust's chief executive, Judy Hargadon, added: "We are absolutely delighted that Rob will be our new chair, helping to drive forward this critically important agenda.  His vision and passion for food, coupled with his business and campaigning experience, make him uniquely qualified for this task."
