The search begins for Nestle School Chef of the Year

19th January 2010, 2:21pm

The search for Nestle School Chef of the Year 2010 has officially begun.

One school chef from Hull is already in the running. Kim Youles from Paisley Primary School will be taking part in the regional finals at Hull College on Thursday 21 January to compete for the chance to go through to the national final in Birmingham later this year.

Youles was the winner of Hull City Council's catering departments' local heats and will now go on to represent Hull schools against other chefs from Yorkshire and the Humber.

Competitors will have to produce a healthy two course meal for only 80p per portion to impress the judging panel, which includes two pupils from Victoria Dock Primary School. They will be judged on the nutritional value of the meal, as well as its appeal to pupils and value for money.

Other judges on the panel include an independent local chef, a dietitian and a member of the Local Authorities Caterers Association.

Keith Hallas, school catering manager for Hull City Council, said: "This competition is a real opportunity for our staff to show what they are capable of achieving and to get the recognition they deserve for providing a consistently high quality service to Hull's school pupils.

"If successful at this regional event we could see a school chef from Hull in the later stages of the competition where the winner will be judged against other regional winners."
