UK's most popular chocolate bars unsuitable for Veggies

14th May 2007, 4:31pm

The Vegetarian Society has spoken out against a move by Masterfoods to make some of Britain's best-known chocolate bars and confectionary unsuitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Masterfoods, the company behind Mars, Twix, Snickers, Maltesers and Bounty will begin using rennet in the production of their chocolate bars. Rennet is a chemical found in the stomach of calves and is used when producing whey.

The decision to start using rennet was a "principled" one according to Masterfoods and said they had to take into consideration the sourcing of their ingredients.

The Vegetarian Society have said they are "extremely disappointed" and hit out at Masterfoods decision calling it "incomprehensible". Rennet has now been used in Masterfoods products since the 1st May 2007 but all products with a best before date up to the 1st October 2007 remain unaffected.

The ice-cream version of Masterfoods chocolate bars will also be unsuitable for vegetarians.
