The event will feature eight teams comprised of three pastry chefs from the following countries: Denmark, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea and the United States.
The team from the UK – Javier Mercado, John Costello and Chris Loder – features current chef lecturers from Westminster Kingsway College (WKC) in central London and a former National Bakery School lecturer from Manchester.
Team manager is Gary Hunter, head of Culinary Arts at WKC. He said: "We are very pleased to be representing the UK at the Amoretti World Pastry Team Championships 2010. The team has been practising since the end of January using most of their weekends to plan and prepare for this competition.
"Luckily, as three of the team works together at Westminster Kingsway College, we have developed a strong team spirit and John's dedication and enthusiasm is a major inspiration to us all as he frequently travels down from Manchester to practice with us.
"In fact, it is with great credit to all that each team member holds down very demanding jobs while managing to find the time and the valuable support from their colleagues to be part of the very first UK team to progress to this world competition in the USA."
The Amoretti World Pastry Team Championships 2010 will take place at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa, Phoenix, Arizona, USA on 5th and 6th July.

This self appointed 'UK' team of chefs includes a Puerto Rican who competed for Mexico in the last Pastry championship event and an Aussie. Good luck to the guys but IMHO the British team should contain British chefs and it it should also be open for everyone to enter the pre-selection not just Westminster College lecturers.
